The Salt Adventure Park and meeting the salt worker: Learning at the end of the journey
From the Gauls to the present day, let’s introduce children to the ancestral techniques of salt harvesting.
Along the paths, in a picturesque landscape, the salt ovens are heated. The Gabelous in their hut bear witness to the terrible repression of this tax on salt: the gabelle. On the tasselier, 17th-century sailors come to stock up on salt for their next cod fishing campaign. Near the salt marsh, the salt workers come to meet them and harvest the white gold of the Pays d’Olonne in front of them. Then it’s their turn to harvest their own salt, a magical moment and a memorable experience that they can share with their parents. With the help of a game of riddles specially designed for them, our apprentice explorers alternate between games and learning.
This roadmap covers a wide range of topics and can therefore be easily integrated into an educational program:
- Physics : water evaporation, the marsh phenomenon
- History: cod fishermen, the Gauls, the Romans…
- Geography: creation of the salt marsh…
- The Senses : Sight (recognizing the flora and fauna of the marsh), Taste (what are the differences between sweet and salty?)
